Essa semana foi marcada pelo lançamento do primeiro álbum do The Starbems, a nova banda do ex-vocalista do Beat Crusaders, Toru Hidaka. Sad Marathon With Vomiting Blood foi lançado em 5 de junho, mesmo dia em que o frontman da banda completou 45 anos. Para comemorar ambas as datas, foi realizado um evento especial na Tower Records de Shibuya, além de uma "maratona" um dia antes do lançamento, na qual os membros se espalharam por 33 lojas da região de Kanto para divulgar o novo álbum. Na próxima postagem, contarei um pouco sobre o evento... agora farei um review do primeiro trabalho do The Starbems, Sad Marathon with Vomiting Blood!
The Starbems é uma banda de "loud rock", que toca punk rock e hardcore carregado de batidas aceleradas e vocais gritados. Um dos focos do grupo são as letras politizadas, que cutucam a ferida das problemáticas do país pós-11 de março (dia em que um grande terremoto, seguido de um tsunami, devastou a região nordeste do Japão). Para potencializar as mensagens das letras, os integrantes se vestem no estilo dos Oi Skinheads dos anos 70, uma subcultura do punk. Camisas pólo da marca Fred Perry e coturnos Dr.Martens nos pés estabelecem a identidade visual da banda. Lembrando que a pronúncia correta é exatamente "Starbems", e não "Starbins" ou "Starbeans" (feijões das estrelas, HUIAHAIUAHUIAHA)! Isso já foi motivo de piada entre os próprios membros da banda, já que muita gente ainda insiste em pronunciar "StarBINS"...
Após o lançamento de Sad Marathon With Vomiting Blood, ficou muito claro o motivo da separação do Beat Crusaders. Hidaka queria trazer um som mais pesado para a banda, mas, além dos outros membros estarem em sintonias diferentes, esse estilo não combinaria com o bom e velho BECR. Apesar do The Starbems conter muitos elementos já conhecidos por nós e um pitadinha sutil de pop punk em certos momentos (palmas, refrões pegajosos etc), é impossível confundir uma música do The Starbems com o BECR. São bandas completamente distintas que refletem todo o talento do nosso idolatrado Toru Hidaka.
Eu, como fã maníaca da carreira de Toru Hidaka há mais de seis anos, não pude ficar de fora de toda essa "festa" pré-lançamento do primeiro álbum dos Bems. Não pude viver isso com o Beat Crusaders, então estou aproveitando ao máximo com o The Starbems (nada se compara ao BECR, mas... amo tudo o que o Hidaka faz!). Seguir os passos dos ídolos, ir atrás de itens exclusivos, gastar uma graninha, sentir aquele friozinho na barriga nos dias que antecedem o lançamento... ahhh, que delícia! Ter um ídolo é muito bom!
Fiz a reserva das duas versões do álbum (limitada e comum), nas Tower Records de Shibuya e Ikebukuro. Aqui no Japão, como já falei anteriormente, é comum as bandas promoverem eventos fechados para os fãs que adquirem o CD em determinadas lojas. Nesse caso, quem comprasse o CD do The Starbems na loja de Shibuya, ganharia um ingresso para o evento de aniversário de 45 anos do Hidaka, no mesmo dia do lançamento do álbum. E quem comprasse em Ikebukuro, ganharia um ingresso para a sessão de autógrafos da banda, um mês após. Não só a Tower Records, mas dezenas de outras lojas Japão afora estão promovendo eventos e distribuindo brindes exclusivos para quem adquire o CD em determinadas unidades... mas esses eram os que mais me interessavam. Eu ainda queria o pôster autografado e a camiseta... mas haja grana para conseguir todos os brindes!
O álbum comum (vermelho) veio com um bottom e o ingresso para a sessão de autógrafos. Já o álbum com DVD (verde) veio só com o ingresso para o evento especial do dia de lançamento. Ah! E ambas as versões vieram com adesivos! ^^
The Starbems é uma banda que funciona melhor ao vivo: é no palco que a magia acontece. É lá que você se arrepia vendo e escutando os caras tocando. É lá que você mede a potência vocal do Hidaka. O cara tem 45 anos e dá um show em qualquer moleque de 20. Canta, berra, dança, pula, não para um segundo, não desafina e ainda faz coreografia com os braços. Nos intervalos, ainda conta piadas e tira um sarro dos outros membros. Mas esse é um assunto para outra postagem....
É claro que o CD é muito bom e superou minhas expectativas acerca dos "Bems", mas para uma Hidaka-maníaca como eu, as participações especiais estragaram músicas que poderiam ser perfeitas. Músicas que, nos shows, são simplesmente incríveis porque são cantadas pelo Hidaka. E ninguém mais. Sem falar na maldita turn table (aquelas mesas de DJ), que também inexiste no palco e aqui arruína grandes canções.
1. Destiny
Uma das primeiras músicas lançadas pela banda antes do lançamento do CD, Destiny é a música que abre o Sad Marathon. E em grande estilo. Gosto muito da introdução, dos backing vocals e de como a música se desenvolve. De longe, uma das faixas mais sólidas do álbum. Porém, é engraçado reparar que, nos shows, Destiny geralmente é a última música a ser tocada pela banda... e aqui ela abre o primeiro trabalho dos caras.

2. The Crackin'
Primeiro trabalho dos Bems. É a música que mais consegue traduzir o estilo da banda. Gosto de ouvir a voz do Hidaka em todas as suas formas, e em apenas 3 minutos, ele alterna entre uma voz mais melódica e uma mais "vomitada". Além do mais, o clipe é perfeito, assistiria mil vezes!

3. Maximum Rock'n'Roll
Velha conhecida dos "arroz de festa" (como eu) dos shows do Hidaka Toru Band, Maximum Rock'N'Roll é a "Hit in the USA" do Starbems. É aquela música para fazer todo mundo bater palmas e cantar em coro. Minha faixa favorita!

4. Wise Blood
Uma música com uma pegada muito hardcore. No entanto, era uma música que tinha de tudo para ser perfeita: sirene na introdução, vocais gritados, batidas aceleradas, tudo acompanhado de uma letra politizada. Confesso que não gostei muito dela por dois motivos: o vocal que abre a música (que não é do Hidaka, e sim do Kyono do TCL) e a maldita "turn table". Estava esperando pelos berros do Hidaka, que só aparecem no meio da música! E a turn table dá ares de hip hop à música. Enfim, estragaram uma música perfeita. Talvez eu seja fã demais do Hidaka e por isso não consiga achar o álbum perfeito, mas, po, eu quero ouvir o cara (e, no máximo, os demais membros nos backing vocals), e não esses convidados especiais que estragam as músicas!

5. Are You Sure?
Talvez a minha segunda faixa favorita do álbum. É outra música que também exprime perfeitamente o estilo da banda. É uma das poucas músicas em que consigo ouvir as três guitarras claramente. Além disso, a voz de Hidaka está um pouco mais melódica nessa faixa, levando os fãs ao delírio!

6. Inside Out
Mais uma vez, podemos ouvir a voz de Hidaka um pouco mais melódica... pelo menos até o refrão, quando ele aumenta a potência e nos mostra tudo o que sabe fazer. Mas é a partir da segunda parte da música onde tudo fica estranho: o cara do Goofy's Holiday (Takashi Endo) entra na música e... estraga tudo. Sinceramente, não gostei de nenhuma participação especial deste CD. Acho que os Bems precisam se consolidar e se consagrar antes de fazer esse tipo de coisa. É um passo muito ousado fazer isso no primeiro álbum, não é isso que queremos ouvir logo de cara. Imagine um novo fã da banda, que não conheceu os caras antes, ouvindo esse CD: "WTF, quem é esse que está cantando? E esse agora? Que banda bagunçada...".

8. Fuckin' in the Air
É a "Fool Groove" do The Starbems. Aquela que eles cantam pra levantar a galera, e um dos membros larga o instrumento para fazer um dueto. É uma faixa muito divertida e você fica esperando ansiosamente pelo refrão pra pular e empurrar os amigos. Aqui, a turn table até encaixou... mas mesmo assim acho que ficaria melhor sem ela... diminuindo o hiphop, e aumentando o fator punkish. Adoro a letra também! Junto com Talkin' 'Bout Lifetime (que não está no álbum), é a música que mais me lembra dos tempos de Beat Crusaders... um punk-pop divertido.

Gosto muito desse Hidaka hardcore version. E adoro essas reviravoltas que ele faz no refrão das músicas, deixando tudo mais melódico antes da porrada voltar. Adoro a letra também!

Nesse álbum, Hidaka colocou à toda prova seu alcance vocal. Ora grita, ora berra, ora parece estar recitando poesia. Já consigo visualizar os bate-cabeças...

11. Human Rights
Pra variar, não gostei dessa voz esquisita no início da música, nem da outra voz que surge logo em seguida (que acredito ser do Hidaka mesmo, mas está COMPLETAMENTE diferente). A introdução com o riffzinho de guitarra é excelente! Hidaka está ótimo no resto da música. Gosto de como no refrão a voz dele se mistura à dos outros membros.

E a turn table está de volta para estragar tudo. E, apesar de não ter convidados especiais, a voz do Hidaka soa diferente em certos momentos. Acho que ele poderia ter mostrado mais o alcance vocal nessa música. É a faixa que menos gosto.

13. Good-bye Love
Outra velha conhecida dos Hidaka-maníacos que não perdiam um só show da banda solo dele. Talvez essa seja a única música apolítica do álbum (se não me perdi na tradução, ela fala sobre o fim do Beat Crusaders). Essa era a música que eu mais aguardava e... me decepcionei. Nada contra o cara do Northern19, gosto da banda, mas... cada um na sua. Acho que a voz dele não combina com a música. Essa música é exclusiva para o timbre do Hidaka! E ficou meio bagunçado depois que ele entrou. Parece que o cara chegou atrasado na gravação e entrou no meio da música mesmo - e ainda quis pegar a música só pra ele. Sem falar que o inglês dele é bem tosquinho (não que do Hidaka seja perfeito, mas, de todos os japas que cantam em inglês, Hidaka é o melhor, disparado, e isso é fato). Seria a minha favorita se fosse 100% Hidaka...

Agora fico no aguardo por um álbum ao vivo dos caras, sem turn tables e sem convidados chatos. Enquanto isso, vou assistindo ao DVD que veio com o álbum. E por falar nele...
O DVD da edição limitada (capa verde) vem com os clipes de The Crackin' e Destiny, além de um mini-documentário-live, o "The Search for Animal Chin ~ Tohoku Live House Daisakusen - Place to Play 2013", o qual mostra a banda em turnê pela região nordeste do Japão. Os caras do The Starbems são ativistas do Tohoku Live House Daisakusen, uma iniciativa que busca arrecadar fundos para a criação de casas de shows na região devastada pelo tsunami de 11 de março. O objetivo do projeto é que músicos de todo o Japão passem a se apresentar nessas casas, o que manteria viva a lembrança do desastre em Tohoku e promoveria o turismo na região.
Além de momentos divertidíssimos com os seis malucos do Bems, há trechos de alguns shows realizados nessas casas de shows de Tohoku, onde eles tocam várias músicas do CD, como The Crackin', Destiny, Wise Blood, Maximum Rock'n'Roll e Fuckin' in the Air. É aí que você percebe o que falei o review inteiro... Hidaka canta MUITO, não precisa chamar ninguém pra fazer participação especial. Há também um momento curioso, em um show, em que o Hidaka QUASE chama a banda de Beat Crusaders... é, pelo jeito, nem ele se acostumou com o Starbems ainda! ^^

This week was marked by the release of the The Starbem's first album, the new band of the former vocalist of Beat Crusaders, Toru Hidaka. Sad Marathon With Vomiting Blood was released on June 5, the same day that the band's frontman turned 45. To celebrate both dates, a special event was held at Tower Records in Shibuya, plus, a "marathon" a day before the launch, in which the members spread across 33 stores in the Kanto region to promote the new album. In the next post, I will tell a little about the event... now I'll make a review of the first work of The Starbems, Sad Marathon with Vomiting Blood!
The Starbems is "loud rock" band, which plays punk rock and hardcore with loaded beats and screaming vocals. One of the focus of the group is the politicized lyrics, poking the wound of Japan's problems after March 11 (the day that a major earthquake, followed by a tsunami, devastated northeastern Japan). To enhance the message of the lyrics, the members dresses in the style of 70's Oi Skinheads, a punk subculture. Fred Perry polo shirt and Dr.Martens boots completes the visual identity of the band. Please remember that the correct pronunciation is exactly "Starbems", not "Starbins" or "Starbeans" (beans of stars, LOL)! This has been a joke among the band members, since many people still insist on pronouncing "StarBINS" ...
After the release of Sad Marathon With Vomiting Blood, the reason why Beat Crusaders broke up became very clear. Hidaka wanted to bring a heavier sound to the band, but, apart that the other members were in different "tunings", this style doesn't fit with the good old BECR. Despite the fact that The Starbems contain many elements already known by us, such as some elements of pop punk (clapping, catchy lyrics etc), it is impossible to confuse a song by The Starbems with BECR. They are completely different bands, and both reflect all the talent of our beloved Toru Hidaka!
I, as a manic fan of Toru Hidaka's career for over six years, couldn't stay out of all this pre-release "party". I couldn't be part of it with Beat Crusaders, so I'm enjoying everything with The Starbems (nothing compares to BECR, but ... I love everything that Hidaka creates!). Follow the idols, go after unique items, spend some money, feel butterflies in my stomach in the days before the launch ... ahhh, what a delight! Having an idol is sooooo fuckin' good!
I booked the two versions of the album (limited and common), in Shibuya and Ikebukuro Tower Records. Here in Japan, as I said in previous posts, it's common for bands to promote events for fans who purchase the CD at certain stores. So who bought the Starbem's CD in Shibuya store, got a ticket to Hidaka's 45th birthday event, on the same day the album was released. And who bought in Ikebukuro, won a ticket for the sign session with the band, one month later. Not only Tower Records, but dozens of other stores around Japan are promoting events and distributing unique gifts for those who buy the CD in certain units... but these two were the ones that most interested me. I was hopping for the signed poster and the t-shirt... but my money is not enough to get all the goodies, lol!
The commom version (red cover) came with a bottom and a ticket to the autograph session. The limited edition (green cover) came with the DVD and the ticket to the special event. Ah! And both versions came with stickers! ^^
The Starbems is a band that works better in the stage: that's where all the magic happens. It's there that you shivers watching and listening to the guys playing. That's where you measure Hidaka's vocal power. The guy is 45 years old and makes any 20 year old kid feel ashamed. Hidaka sings, shouts, dances, jumps, doesn't stop for one second, and still does not loose pitch and keeps dancing with his arms. In the intervals, he even tells jokes and makes fun of other members. But that's a topic for another post...
Of course, the CD is very good and exceeded my expectations about the "Bems". But as a Hidaka-maniac, the special guests spoiled songs that could be perfect. Songs that, live, are just amazing because they are sung by Hidaka. And no one else. Not to mention the damn turn table, which also doesn't exist on stage and ruin great songs in the album.
1. Destiny
One of the first songs released by the band before the release of the CD, Destiny is the opening song.. in great style. I love the intro, the backing vocals and the way the song develops. By far, one of the strongest tracks on the album. But it is funny to note that, in live concerts, Destiny is usually the last song to be played by the band... and here it opens the guys' first work.

2. The Crackin'
Bems' first work. The music fits perfectly with the band style. I love to hear Hidaka's voice in all its forms, and in just three minutes, it switches between a shouting voice to a melodic one. Moreover, the videoclip is just perfect, I could watch it a thousand times!

3. Maximum Rock'n'Roll
Old "buddy" of those who always have been to Toru Hidaka Band's concerts (like me), Maximum Rock'n'Roll is The Starbem's "Hit in the USA". It's that song to make everyone clap and sing along. So far, my favorite track!

4. Wise Blood
A very hardcore song. However, it was a song that had everything to be perfect: the siren in the introduction, screaming vocals, accelerated beats and riffs, all accompanied by political lyrics. But I confess that I didn't like it for just two reasons: the voice that opens the song (which is not Hidaka's, but Kyono's, from TCL) and the damned "turn table". I was waiting for Hidaka's screams, which only appear in the middle of the song! And the turn table gives a hip hop air to the song... which I don't like. Anyway, it ruined a perfect song. Maybe I'm too in love with Hidaka and I can't find the album perfect because of those little details, but, hey, I wanna hear the guy (and, at most, the other members on backing vocals), and not those stupid special guests who spoil the songs! Hidaka's voice is too fuckin' awesome and perfect to be wasted!

5. Are You Sure?
Perhaps my second favorite track on the album. It's also another song that perfectly expresses the style of the band. It's one of the few songs that I can clearly hear the three guitars. Furthermore, Hidaka's voice is a bit more melodic here, making me totally crazy!

6. Inside Out
Again, we hear Hidaka's voice slightly more melodic... at least until the chorus, when it increases power and shows us all what he can do. But it's from the second part of the song where everything gets strange: the guy from Goofy's Holiday (Takashi Endo) joins the song and... ruins everything. Honestly, I didn't enjoy any of the special participation of this CD. I think Bems need to consolidate first before doing this kind of thing. It is a very bold step to do that on the very first album, that's not what we want to hear right away. Imagine a new fan of the band, some guy who didn't know the band before, listening to the CD: "WTF, who is this? Who is this now? And now this? What a mess...".

8. Fuckin' in the Air
It's the Starbem's "Fool Groove"! It's that song they sing to lift the crowd, and one member drops the guitar to do a duet. It's a really fun track and you keep looking forward to get to the chorus to jump and push your friends. Here, the turn table fits fine... but even so, I think it would sound way better without it... reducing the hip-hop factor and increasing the punkish. Love the lyrics, too! Along with Talkin' 'Bout Lifetime (which is not included on the album), it's the song that reminds me most of Beat Crusaders times... a pop-punk fun song.

In this album, Hidaka put on proof all of his vocal range. I never doubted of his talent (he's just PERFECT *o*), but now he proofs to the world that he's a complete musician. He can yell and screams, and still be sweet, calm and very melodic. I can already visualize the mosh time...

I didn't like that weird voice at the beginning of the song (sounds like a hamster!), and also the other voice that appears in the sequence (which I believe is Hidaka's, but here it is COMPLETELY different from usual!). The introduction and the guitar riff are just excellent! Hidaka sounds great on the rest of the song, as usual. I like how, in the chorus, his voice blends with the other members.

And the turn table is back to spoil everything! And, although there's no special guests on this one, Hidaka's voice sounds different at some times. I think he could have shown more of his vocal range in this song. It's my least favorite track.

13. Good-bye Love
Another old "buddy" of Hidaka-maniacs who did not lose a single concert of his solo band. Maybe this is the only apolitical song on the album (if I didn't lose myself in translation, it talks about the end of Beat Crusaders). That was the song that I was waiting the most... and I got disappointed. Nothing against the Northern19's guy, I like his band, but... keep on his own band. That's it. I think his voice doesn't suit the song. This song is exclusive to Hidaka's tone! It got a little messy after he started to sing. It seems that the guy was late for the recording session and started to sing in the middle of the song - and still wanted to get the music just for him! Not to mention that his English is pretty bad (Hidaka's english is not perfect, but he's the best one on it in j-rock... and that's a fact). It would be my favorite track if it was 100% Hidaka...

Now I'm waiting for a live album, without turn tables and boring guests. Meanwhile, I'm watching the DVD that came with the album. And talking about it...
The limited edition (green cover) comes with a DVD with the videoclips of The Crackin' and Destiny, plus a mini-live documentary, "The Search for Animal Chin ~ Tohoku Live House Daisakusen - Place to Play 2013", which shows the band on tour in the northeastern region of Japan. The guys are activists of Tohoku Live House Daisakusen, an project that raise funds for the creation of venues in the region devastated by the tsunami of March 11. The main goal is that musicians from all over Japan start to perform on these live houses, which would keep alive the memory of the disaster in Tohoku and promote tourism in the region.
In addition to the fun-times with the six crazy Bems, there are stretches of some concerts held in these venues in Tohoku, where they play several songs of the CD, such as The Crackin', Destiny, Wise Blood, Maximum Rock'n'Roll and Fuckin' in the Air. And that's where you realize what I talked about the entire review... Hidaka is perfect, by himself. Nobody needs to sing with or for him. There is also a curious moment in a show where Hidaka ALMOST calls the band Beat Crusaders... it's very funny! But I think he didn't get used to the Starbems yet, so as we! ^^
